Note: 64 bit here refers to Windows 2003 (64 bit), Windows Vista 64 bit, Windows XP x64 and Windows 7 64
++ Note: You can install the 32-bit CS3 plug-in by editing the getinfo.ini file and setting the Windows2003 entry in the SupportOS section to "Y". The file needs to have the read-only property removed before editing and saving. Works like a charm with the new x64 driver.
+++ Note: Will not install for versions of Photoshop earlier than CS3. Has bicubic resizing option.

Modifications from previous version of Media Configuration Tool:

a) Media information of Premium Glossy Paper 2 280 and Premium Semi-Glossy Paper 2 280 has been added.
b) Media information of Premium Plain Paper 80 has been added.

+ Updated Media Information File dated 10/29/10 is also available to add media information for Premium Glossy Paper 2 280 and Premium Semi-Glossy Paper 2 280. A later update, version 0005, dated 11/30/10 has the following additional fix: 1) The failure that a calibration error occurs in rare occasions when performing calibration has been fixed.

Firmware release notes:

Changes with firmware 1.05 -> 1.08 (X300 printers; updated for 1.10 for 8300)

The failure that printer not retrieve from sleep mode in rare cases has been fixed.

Changes with firmware 1.38 -> 1.39 (X100 printers)

The paper feeding sequence for roll paper has been improved, aiming for a decrease in paper jam.

Changes with firmware 1.36 -> 1.38 (X100 printers)

Modifications:

1. In case the nozzles are clogged, formerly you would stop printing and check the printout, and then continue printing by pressing the Online key.
2. Now it automatically checks the level of clogging, and if it is possible to print it will continue printing, and if it needs a printhead replacement, it will display a Replace Printhead message. This modification will greatly improve the workability.
3. [Paper Details]/[Return Defaults] function has been fixed.

Changes with firmware 1.35 --> 1.36 (X100 printers)

Modifications:

1. Change of head non-ejection error processing specification
2. Optimize the threshold value(s) of warning/error messages displayed when a head non-ejection occurs.
<Changes>
3. Revise the message that makes the ink level detection disable (languages other than Japanese)
In the first screen, it says “disable” and the second screen asks “Cancel?”. However, as it is not clear what
should be canceled, the message has been revised.
<First screen> <Second screen>
Current: To continue, you ->Cancel?
must disable ink - No
level detection. - Yes
Revised: To continue, you ->release?
must release ink - No
level detection - Yes
4. Add the paper jam detection function using cutting operation
The following paper jam is detectable by using the multi-function sensor.
- The paper height and the edge of paper are detected when cutting paper.
- The paper jam is detected by detecting the leading edge of every page after paper is cut.
5. Permanent countermeasures are taken against the issue that the initial ink filling not completed correctly and
error 2F2F or 4048 occurs (the pump structure of the ink tank unit has been changed). Along with this, the firmware
has been changed so that to improve the accuracy of the stop position of the cam that drives the pump (upward compatible
and possible to use for the pump with permanent countermeasures not taken) .

Changes with firmware 1.35:

Firmware version 1.35 offers improvements in reducing the amount ink waste during maintenance routines, decreases graininess of “Highest” mode print quality, and more. This firmware also adds Canon’s new photo and fine art paper to the media settings. All iPF5100/6100/8100/9100/8000S/9000S users are advised to update to the version 1.35. (Note: Some of the improvements/changes described here for v1.35 were implemented in v1.32 and/or v1.33, which were not available as upgradable firmware updates.)

Reduction of Ink for Everyday Maintenance Routine
►The maintenance head cleaning sequence now requires less ink compared with the routine performed by the older firmware versions, contributing to lowering overall running cost. The new cleaning routine improves the timer suction dependent on the environmental reading of the temperature and humidity sensor controls.

Improved Graininess for “Highest” Print Mode
►When printing in “Highest” print mode, the graininess has been further reduced.

Changes with firmware 1.25:

There is a PDF which describes what has been changed:

Note that a Wiki poster was told verbally that Firmware 1.25: "changes the way the printers perform a Head Cleaning on start-up. In firmware 1.23, if the printer has been on stand-by or powered off for an extended time, when powered on or woken-up, it will automatically go through a "Head Cleaning A" which means the printer goes through a cleaning cycle then tests the heads. If ok, the printer goes on-line, if not another cleaning and test. With the 1.25 firmware, the printer tests the heads first, and won't do a cleaning unless called for. This should save ink and wear and tear on the heads."

Changes with firmware 1.23/drivers/plugin/media configuration tool:

  1. The screening/dithering pattern has improved and now matches the Epson 3800 quality. Reported by Steven Katzman his his Field Test to take 20% longer to print (unidirectional tested), but increased quality definitely worth it. See this thread.
  2. It is now possible to print from the tray with expanded borders. This is selected in the Photoshop plugin (or the operating system level driver) by choosing "Manual (3 mm Margins)" instead of "Manual" as the Media Source. There is subtle banding in the last 1.25 inches when using "Manual (3 mm Margins)". It isn't known yet whether the manual banding adjustment for the Cassette will fix the banding for the tray. This does allow you to print with a much narrower margin on sheet paper which is too thick to be fed from the Cassette. Note: The "Manual (3 mm Margins)" Media Source is only available for some Media Types as shown in this table.
  3. New or changed printer menu items:
    1. Trim Edge Reload, which apparently trims the edge of a roll when paper is reloaded (or perhaps trims off the barcode if it was printed--not sure which)
    2. When roll length enabled, printer now cuts the barcode from the leading edge of the paper when it is reloaded (after the printer reads the correct paper type and length)
    3. Skew Check Lv. has added "High Accuracy"
    4. Trim Edge First has added "Automatic"
    5. Clean Roller replaced by Clean Roller1 and Clean Roller2
    6. Ignore Mismatch changed to Detect Mismatch (Pause/Warning/None)
    7. Use Power Save eliminated
    8. Sleep Timer now has 240 minute choice added
  4. Media Configuration Tool
    1. New Media Types are available to better match Canon's line of papers
    2. The Edit Media Types now works correctly to Show/Hide Media Types. Hidden Media Types do not show up on the list of Media Types in the plugin, making it easier to find the Media Types that you do use.
  5. With plugin version 2.03 and later you can't set the Vacuum Strength from the "Set" button under Media Type. Both Vacuum Strength and Head Height must now be set from printer LCD menu. This change was probably made due to confusion over which setting took precedence (printer LCD or Plugin) when the two were in conflict, and resulting user problems where they thought a certain setting was in effect, but it wasn't.
  6. The number of possible choices for Far Ed Band Adj has been increased from 20 to 32. This adjustment can be used to fix the banding in the trailing 1.25 inches problem.
